Join our special members-only admission hours to Shofuso on Thursday, October 2nd! This month will feature Rakugo Storytelling by Master Ryūtei Saryū, and Lyrical Dharma: Music & Mindfulness with Ofosu Jones-Quartey (Born I).

Rakugo Storytelling with Master Ryūtei Saryū

Rakugo is a traditional Japanese storytelling performance where one master artist, armed with only a folding fan and hand towel, creates entire worlds through voice, gesture, and sheer imagination. Seated on a simple cushion, our visiting rakugoka will transport you through hilarious and heartwarming tales, skillfully switching between multiple characters with subtle changes in posture and voice, before delivering the signature “ochi”—a clever, often surprising twist that serves as both punchline and moment of profound insight. This centuries-old art form celebrates the beauty of simplicity and the limitless power of human creativity, offering audiences an intimate, unforgettable journey into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

 

Lyrical Dharma: Music & Mindfulness at Shofuso with Ofosu Jones-Quartey (Born I)

Meditation teacher, author, and hip-hop artist Ofosu Jones-Quartey (Born I), whose work bridges contemplative practice and creative expression, visits Shofuso on Oct.2 for an offering of music and mindfulness. The evening begins with guided meditation and a restorative soundbath, inviting stillness and deep listening. Ofosu will then share reflections from his new book, Lyrical Dharma: Hip Hop as Mindfulness (Parallax Press, foreword by Alice Walker), alongside a full live performance of his acclaimed album Komorebi, which blends hip-hop lyricism with Buddhist insight. Following the performance, guests are invited to a special book signing where Ofosu will inscribe copies using Japanese sumi ink, honoring the Zen-inspired setting. Limited-edition vinyl copies of Komorebi will also be available. This is an opportunity to experience mindfulness, art, and community in a beautiful space where tradition and creativity meet.
