Lafcadio Hearn once wrote that “the dead have no shadows”. This fall, we invite you to look closer.
Step through the gates of the historic Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center and into the shadow-laden world of the Heian era. For this exclusive iteration of Kaidan: An Evening of 100 Spirits, we are stripping away the stage to offer a rare, deeply intimate parlor magic and storytelling experience as well as offering a high-end black tie experience for those among you who enjoy the art and artistry of the Japanese folktale.
Intimate Candlelit Parlor Show
Limited to a small circle of guests within the traditional architecture of Shofuso, this performance trades grand spectacle for the chilling precision of close-up illusion and the ancient power of the spoken word. Inspired by the ghostly chronicles of Lafcadio Hearn and Ueda Akinari, Kaidan invites you to witness the impossible just inches from your eyes. Leave the modern world at the garden gate, and prepare to be spirited away. In the quiet halls of Shofuso, the spirits are closer than ever.
The Experience Includes:
- Atmospheric Storytelling: Journey through the “Kaidan” (ghost stories) of old Japan, where vengeful spirits, shapeshifters, and moral quandaries come to life, this time drawing also from the 1776 publication of Ugestsu Monogatari.
- Parlor Magic & Illusion: Experience a specialized repertoire of magic designed for an intimate setting—where the boundary between the natural and supernatural dissolves.
- A Historic Setting: Immerse yourself in the authentic beauty of Shofuso. Set against the sliding doors and tatami mats of Fairmount Park’s hidden gem, the house itself becomes a character in our evening of hauntings.
- Cultural Connection: Developed with the expertise of Cultural Competency Dramaturg Rob Buscher, every tale and trick is grounded in the authentic folklore of pre-modern Japan.
General Admission Includes: An intimate parlor show in a unique location plus access to a Suntory cash bar and pre-show live music
VIP Admission Includes: All the above plus tintype photos of you and your group and a tasting by Suntory before the show. The Saturday event also includes a post-show close up magic and liquor tasting with the magician.
Pre-Show Add-on Includes: An exclusive and private tour around the Shofuso House and Gardens before the 7pm show on September 19th
Note: Shofuso is a historic site. Guests will be asked to remove their shoes and to eat and drink in designated areas before entering the house. Please plan accordingly.
