“The Ones Left Behind” is a surprising glimpse at deep social inequality in the third-largest economy in the world. It gives voice to the people who need it most—the everyday, hardworking, single mothers of Japan.
Directed by Rionne McAvoy, the award-winning documentary is unlike any other. It delves deep into Japanese society, culture, and history to offer a picture of Japan very different from the one we think we know.
Presented as part of the Japan Global Issues series of programs organized by Penn’s Center for East Asian Studies, this film screening will be followed by a discussion with director Rionne McAvoy, hosted by Rob Buscher, a lecturer at Penn’s Program in Asian American Studies (ASAM).
