Shofuso represents the friendship between Japan and Philadelphia, and it is the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia’s mission to maintain and preserve this historic site and landscape.

Your gift directly supports our efforts to maintain Shofuso’s unique and vital legacy.

In 2017, we conducted a $75,000 maintenance project on our hinoki bark roof, which we do in five year intervals. In fall 2018, four landscape designers and maintenance workers from Kobe, Japan assisted in restoring the original tea garden as designed by Tansai Sano. This project included: stone setting, bamboo fence building, and installing a stepping stone bridge. Upcoming projects include restoration and maintenance of our historic landscape and pond, cleaning the Hiroshi Senju fusuma murals, and conduct conservation carpentry repairs on the house itself.

By preserving this historic American landscape, we demonstrate how we value diversity in America. With Shofuso preserved and available, everyone has an opportunity to experience authentic Japanese art and culture right here in West Fairmount Park.
