PRESERVE A PIECE OF HISTORY
Gifts made to the Roof Restoration Fund will enable us to conduct necessary preventative maintenance on Shofuso’s hinoki bark roof, the only one of its kind outside of Japan.
Hinoki, a Japanese cypress, is a rare and treasured material. The care and upkeep of a hinoki bark roof demands precision and knowledge of traditional roofing techniques. This maintenance work requires us to bring Japanese roofers from Nara, Japan to Shofuso every five or six years to perform repairs. Regular maintenance work will keep our roof functioning until 2030 and beyond.
