Join the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia as we celebrate Hina-matsuri or Girls' Day! Learn about the traditional decorations for this holiday and enjoy a special kimono demonstration, where select volunteers will have the chance to be dressed in kimono.
Kimono Dressing

Volunteers will have the opportunity to be dressed in a kimono. These are two examples from an event held in 2024 at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden.
Hina Doll Display

Girl's Day in Japan is also known as Hina-matsuri or Doll's Day. The traditional date for this celebration is March 3rd and during this time you're likely to see large, tiered displays of ornate dolls. These Hina dolls represent very specific rolls in the imperial court of the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Hina doll sets come in all shapes and sizes, from miniature versions to massive installations with hundreds, or even a thousand dolls!
