2021 Philadelphia Obon Festival Marketplace

The 9th Annual Philadelphia Obon Festival continues a new Shofuso tradition, born out of the hardships of the previous year, to light lanterns and float them on Shofuso’s pond dedicated to those no longer with us. To give our guests the full experience for 2021, we have invited some of our favorite merchants from the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival and Obon Festival to showcase their Japan-focused merchandise. Check out the shops below to find great gift ides or just something special for yourself.

THIS NIGHT

THIS NIGHT makes beautiful, comfortable socks that are designed in New York City, knit in North Carolina, and inspired by the colors and patterns of Japan (where the designer, Kate T. Williamson, had a scholarship to study art for a year). She worked with the talented people at her hometown mill in Reading, PA, for about two years to get the socks just right: soft, US-grown cotton, in a weight that is substantial yet thin enough to fit into shoes well, with a band that is comfortable yet stays up, flat toe seams, and a touch of lycra, so they keep that cozy, "fresh pair" feeling, even after lots of wearing and washing. Kate is also an artist, and she wrote and illustrated a book about Japanese visual culture, A Year in Japan. Her ink and watercolor art (featured in stationery and prints) and socks complement one another, as both are influenced by Japan and often feature flowers, geometric patterns, and interesting color combinations.
