Taiko Workshop – Repertoire Class

Develop your Taiko skills in the shadow of Shofuso’s historic 17th century architecture while enjoying the serenity and beauty of Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park! Throughout the 2023 season, taiko instructor Mac Evans will be teaching weekly taiko lessons offering two sessions each Saturday (NO CLASS on June 17 & July 22):

  • 1:30-2:30 is a technique class, where Mac will introduce form on hitting the taiko and producing a good sound;
  • 3:00-4:00 is a repertoire class, where each week builds into developing a song. It’s encouraged to come to each class to develop a piece that can be performed at Obon.

Both classes require no previous experience. Wear clothing that is comfortable to move around in and appropriate for outdoor weather. Jewelry such as rings, dangling necklaces and earrings are discouraged (for safety’s sake). Drums and bachi (drumsticks) will be provided.

BIO

Mac Evans is an East-Coast based taiko artist.
He has been playing in groups for over 15 years from Maine, Boston, and New York before landing in Philadelphia. From his experience performing in different ensembles and from instruction he’s received from multiple teachers he has developed a way of playing taiko that focuses on the mechanics of getting a good sound from the drum. Mac’s goal is to pay homage to both the blue-collar workers who play at festivals as well as the artists who have popularized taiko for its flashiness.
