Join us for a screening of the 1939 film The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum by Kenji Mizoguchi. This story follows an onnagata—a male actor specializing in playing female roles—struggling for artistic mastery, offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of kabuki theater in late nineteenth century Japan.

The screening will be prefaced by remarks from Monique D’Almeida, curator of Scandal and Virtue, and Rob Buscher, Associate Director of Organizational Culture at the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia.
