Shofuso Honors Ikebana International Philadelphia Chapter 71
Shofuso is proud to host an exhibition to honor Ikebana International (I.I.) Philadelphia Chapter 71 and their continued support. Members of I.I. Chapter 71 generously provide Shofuso with beautiful ikebana arrangements weekly during the season, adding beauty to our historic site.
The 2020 Ikebana exhibition is displayed among our ongoing exhibition, Shofuso and Modernism: Mid-Century Collaboration between Japan and Philadelphia. Ikebanas are an essential part of this exhibition as flower arrangements were displayed during Shofuso’s original exhibition. As a part of architectural documentation of this project, members of I.I. Chapter 71 created the utsushi (appropriation, emulation, inspiration, attribution in Japanese term) of the arrangement that was at Shofuso’s opening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1954. These photographs are also on view in the slide presentation inside of the house.
The Ikebana arrangements are provided by practitioners of multiple schools of ikebana and presented throughout the house, garden and on the veranda.
