Erica Smith-Klocek is Vice President, Associate General Counsel of Covance Inc., the drug development business of LabCorp. Erica is chief counsel for Covance’s R&D Labs organization, including Central Laboratories, Early Development, and Covance Research Products. Erica also has lead responsibility for all litigation and employment matters company-wide.
Prior to joining Covance in 2014, Erica was a partner in the litigation practice at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Philadelphia. At Morgan Lewis, Erica gained extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry, ranging from defending pharmaceutical manufacturers and wholesalers in pricing, marketing, and antitrust litigation matters, advising clients on pricing and marketing strategies, and advising on discovery and data retention issues.
Erica serves on the boards of Community Legal Services and Philadelphia Legal Assistance, two organizations that provide free legal services to Philadelphians living in poverty, and is an Executive Committee member and past president (2013) of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania. While at Morgan Lewis, Erica served on the Philadelphia Office Recruitment Committee and the Class Action Working Group. She was a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Judicial Selection Committee from 2013-2014.
Erica was recognized as a “Best Under 40” by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association in 2014, a “Minority Business Leader” of 2011 by the Philadelphia Business Journal, an “Outstanding Young Healthcare Attorney” by Nightingales in 2009, and a “Rising Star Under 40” by The Legal Intelligencer in 2009. In 2011, she was honored by the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development for her work on issues of racial, social and economic justice.
Prior to moving to Philadelphia, Erica was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, served as Court Counsel to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Palau, and was a law clerk to the Honorable Thomas G. Nelson of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Erica obtained her law degree from St. John’s University School of Law, magna cum laude, and her bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, with honors.
