During our Annual Meeting, the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia awards individuals and organizations who have furthered relations between Philadelphia and Japan through the exchange of commerce, culture, education, and volunteerism. This year, we recognize the Japanese Language School of Philadelphia for Excellence in Education.
Located at the Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, PA, the Japanese Language School of Philadelphia offers youth and adults the opportunity to study Japanese and learn more about the country via extracurricular Saturday classes. Coursework includes both Japanese as a Heritage Language classes for children, which are taught entirely in Japanese and encourage bilingual fluency, and Japanese as a Second Language classes for college students and adults, including coursework to perpare students for the Japanese SAT II and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Additionally, the school offers a Japanese Ministry of Education-approved curriculum for Japanese national students who may be temporarily living in the United States.
A long-time partner with JASGP, the Japanese Language School of Philadelphia is a valuable community resource for both Japanese nationals, Japanese Americans, and students of all ages with an interest in studying Japanese. In addition to their educational work, JLSP runs several activity and games booths at Sakura Sunday, and their children’s chorus performs on the main stage every year.
