On September 17th, join us at the Rikumo concept store for a special performance from master calligraphist and performance artist Setsuhi Shiraishi. Armed with brush and ink, Setsuhi will create large-scale works of art set to music. After, join us for short talk and a Q+A with Setsuhi herself, where she’ll explain her artistic process. In partnership with the Japan Society of Greater Philadelphia, this amazing performance is sure to be unlike any you’ve ever seen.
Setsuhi Shiraishi is a Japanese artist that specializes in shodo, a form of artistic Japanese calligraphy. She became a calligraphy master at 22 years old, and began performing with live music, using calligraphy almost like a dance. Today she travels around the world creating large-scales works in a performance setting. Combining calligraphy with music and sensory experience, Setsuhi’s performance elevates the Japanese language into an art form.
