Fukubukuro, or New Year’s Lucky Bag, is an annual tradition in Japan that takes place during the first week of the new year. The tradition started at a department store in the Ginza area of Tokyo and has snowballed into a shopping frenzy where people wait in line days beforehand to grab a fukubukuro from their favorite retail stores. Even grocery stores participate!
Bag prices usually vary from ￥1,000 ($8.40) to ￥20,000 ($168.00)but can even go as high as over ￥1,000,000 ($8,405.00)! Cheaper bags include items like trinkets and small accessories, while more expensive bags will hide luxury items like plane tickets and vacation packages. Brands like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Apple, Hello Kitty, and Studio Ghibili all sell fukubukuro on new years day.
Here are some examples of this year’s Studio Ghibili fukubukuro from Donguri Kyowakoku!
So, if you had a chance to grab one, which stores would you flock to?
