When the new Ace Attorney game came out, I knew it would only be a matter of time before I decided to cosplay from it. A good friend of mine was already going to cosplay the new character Athena and I decided to cosplay the character’s friend Juniper with her. Juniper is a rather sweet character, with a few outfit choices. I chose her school outfit, because I tend to gravitate towards uniforms when it comes to picking costumes.
Her dress seems pretty simple at first glance, the biggest challenge was going to be the pleating detail all along the dress. I started with a muslin mockup before I started cutting into my fabric. I started out with a base pattern, one that was similar to the shape I needed for the dress. I used pattern McCalls 6102 and then took in the pattern to fit me. After I did that, I measured where the pleats were and cut the muslin where I drew the lines. On a new piece of muslin, I laid out the strips that were cut out, spreading them as wide as I wanted the pleats to be. I traced the new shape it made, making sure I traced where I wanted the pleats to be. Making sure my measurements were correct, I tested sewing down the pleating on the muslin before I cut into my fabric. Once I was satisfied with how it looked, I used the muslin as my new pattern piece to cut into my fabric. The actual process of this wasn’t difficult, just tedious to do all the pleats.
The finished dress, with the sleeves and without the collar attached. I made the cuffs of the sleeves longer to match my reference.
The collar was a modified version of my Rise sailor collar. I used a new piece of muslin to daft the new collar points, but it had the same shape along the back and fit around the collar of my dress in the same way. The stripe along the collar is just bias tape that’s top stitched down. The little emblem on the modesty panel was just painted on, the panel has a little snap that opens it up so I can get my head in and out of the dress.
That’s the basics of the dress itself! The flower was something that I had bought and clipped into the wig. Overall it was a fairly simple costume to construct. I was happy to cosplay from the new game. With this costume its my 6th Ace Attorney costume, and I’ll probably have more in the future I’ll end up making.
