Zenkaikon was always a local con for me. It was always a con I could just go down to and check out for a day, since I lived so close to its previous locations. I was excited for the chance to check it out again, since I had skipped out on it the year before. Last year they moved to the Lancaster Convention Center, which was probably a better choice for it, since it was outgrowing the convention center near King of Prussia.
Zenkaikon is a basic anime convention, which is starting to expand more, now that its attendance is rising. Its location in Lancaster, PA puts it right downtown, which is a pretty scenic location. It’s a small city with a lot of food cheep food options close by, so people going don’t have to worry about going far away if they want to eat. The area itself has a lot of see, so cosplayers can find some pretty interesting locations to get photos. The one negative is that driving in the area is a bit difficult, it was hard to try and find parking at first, and I knew the area fairly well.
The con itself is still rather small, it was clear they had really expanded their programing to include more and different types of panels. The dealers room had grown much more then we had seen in the past. The con is really starting to slowly grow into its own. I think this was a pretty great con for someone going to a con for the first time. Its smaller, so they wouldn’t get lost in the crowds, and a small con offers a safer sort of environment. My one complaint though was that everything was condensed within the first few floors of the hotel it was hosted in, so there wasn’t a whole lot you could explore within the convention center. You could easily walk the building in less then 15 minutes.
With how the con is slowly growing, I could see this convention really pick up and start to become a mid size convention within the eastern PA area.
