Another cosplayer spotlight! This time on the cosplayer Melvinopolis. A talented cosplayer, I had to take the time and highlight her here.
What first got you into cosplay?
I went to my first anime convention, Otakon 2001, before I had ever heard of cosplay. When I got there and saw all the people with costumes, I knew that the next time I went, I wanted to have one too! I took a hiatus from it in high school since none of my friends were interested in anime at the time, but I did take a sewing class as an elective and ended up loving it. So a few years later when I ended up in the “nerdy dorm” in college, I found my way back to cosplay!
Such a hard question! It’s probably a tie between Sailor Neptune and Kaine from Nier. Neptune is so fun to wear, but Nier is one of my favorite video games so I put a lot of care into the details of my Kaine costume and I’m very proud of it.
My Evangelion plugsuit is the most difficult costume I’ve made, sewing-wise. All-around most difficult though would have to be Himiko from Persona 4. It was a bit of a logistical nightmare, both to put together and to wear!
I have so many, but I think my biggest dream costume is Artemesia from Persona 3. I love the design, it’s one of my top favorite video games, and it looks like such a great challenge!
For the past few years, it’s been Katsucon–partly because of the beautiful location and partly because it’s one of the few conventions that my west-coast friends fly over for.
What new skill have you learned from creating cosplay?
So many! I’ve learned how to make clothing, use power tools, how to royally screw up spray painting…Last year, I was excited to learn how to make my first corset. I’m also working on learning how to make better props and armor.
Do your skills in cosplay apply to anything you do outside of that, like work or any other hobbies?
Not really. I have made some curtains and other household items, but that’s about it.
Is there anything in particular you tend to lean towards? (genre, character type, etc). How do you pick what character you want to cosplay?
I definitely lean mostly toward anime costumes, but I do a fair amount of video game cosplay as well. I’m biased toward cute red-haired characters since I’m a redhead myself! I generally try to strike a balance between my favorite characters and the ones that suit me the best. I love when the two line up!
It varies depending on how much time I have before a con and how difficult it is. My simplest costumes can only take a day or two while the more complex ones can take weeks or more. My plugsuit only took about two weeks, but I was only working part time so I had a lot of free time to dedicate to it. If I were to make it now, it would probably take longer.
Advice for someone first getting into cosplay?
Google is your best friend! There are tutorials out there for everything these days. Also, start simple! You don’t need to dive head first into a crazy complex costume. Take your time to practice your skills and build up to that dream costume!
Here’s what I generally keep updated!
