Alright, it appears that I’ve somewhat committed myself to blogging about YouTube videos and personalities, so in keeping with that theme I’d like to introduce a great resource for aspiring artists, particularly those who wish to learn to draw in the Japanese manga style. Mark Crilley is an American comic book creator and artist who first became enamored with the Japanese manga aesthetic after traveling to Japan in his youth to teach English. He is also a popular YouTuber who uses his skills as a manga artist to teach his YouTube audience How To Draw.
In his videos, Crilley demonstrates many different drawing styles and techniques. What makes his videos so popular is that unlike most drawing tutorials that only show a time-lapsed production and offer no real instruction, Crilley gives vocal commentary over the course of his drawing, talking and teaching you step by step. He shows you how to compose your drawing and then he explains the whys behind his method.
There is incredible variety in the content of his videos. He has tutorials for drawing in a more realistic style – even photorealistic like in this video of how to draw a realistic eye –, how to draw in a classic manga style, and even how to draw chibis, an exaggerated small or childlike version of a character. He even shows you how to draw popular anime characters and Japanese icons like Hatsune Miku. Among his tutorials for drawing people he has videos dedicated to drawing details like specific poses, hair styles, types of clothing, body parts such as hands and feet…the list goes on! In addition, he also has tutorials where he teaches art composition and perspective, storyboarding for comic books and other useful techniques. His videos satisfy the needs of someone who is just starting to learn how to draw all the way to someone who is serious about becoming an artist and/or illustrator, and he frequently takes suggestions for future tutorials from the comments section of his videos. Crilley uploads new videos every week, typically posting a time-lapsed version of his new How To Draw tutorial the day before his full length narrated version.
In addition to his established YouTube career, Crilley has also published several books, comic and otherwise. His first published work was a comic book series entitledAkiko, which ran for fifty two issues and inspired a series of kid’s books from Random House Children’s Books. He also has two manga series, one complete entitled Miki Falls that follows the life of Miki Yoshida in her senior year of high school, and the other current work-in-progress series called Brody’s Ghost, about a young man with untapped psychic abilities who learns to master his powers after encountering Thalia, a ghost girl in need of his help. Crilley also recently published the second installment of his Mastering Manga books, and you can find a sneak peek of those books here andhere.
