Another cosplayer spotlight! This time on Voxane cosplay, a cosplayer from the CT area and someone that I’ve done multiple cosplays with!
What first got you into cosplay?
I was really into anime and video games as long as I can remember, and in high school I was delving deeper and deeper into the subculture. I heard about conventions, and a few google searches later I learned that dressing up as fictional characters was a /thing/. As a child who dressed up as serveral pokemon for several halloweens, I was all about this.
It’s impossible for me to pick a very favorite, I have so much fun in all my costumes. Probably my Ameto Umegiri (Express Emotion version). It’s one of the most niche costumes I’ve done! Ameto is a character from Beatmania IIDX, a rhythm game which you barely see the ‘characters’, and I dressed up as an outfit from one partiuclar song. It was very cute, and the people who recognized me I had an instant connection with!
Gosh, I rarely make anything terribly complex. Probably my Auxo (Five Star Stories) costume. I was still very, very new to sewing when I decided to do this and had NEVER done any prop making. This costume taught me about dying fabric, working with stretch fabric, working with craft foam, using a dremel tool….a lot of firsts. I’m surprsed it wasn’t a complete disaster.
I have 2 real dream costumes I’d love to make – Dizzy from Guilty Gear and Fatima Megeara from Five Star Stories! Dizzy is something that’s probably within my current skill range, I’m just terrified of doing my favorite character an injustice. Megaera is a total dream, Five Star Stories is my faaaavorite manga, and the fatima designs are gorgeous, but pobably too complex for me unless I delved A LOT of time into it! – Favorite convention. Probably Katsucon? I really like the location, and a lot of people make really nice costumes for it. I’d like to go to a more gaming oriented convention, though! I hear really good things about MAGFest and PAXEast, so those are cons I really want to try and make this year!
What new skill have you learned from creating cosplay?
Everything, haha. I barely sewed before cosplay! My mom taught me how to, and now she comes to me for advice. I also learned a ton about different paints and dyes. I also learned how to maintain and style wigs (Though I’m very much so still learning). I also never wore make up before cosplay! That’s a skill that I’m really glad I honed through cosplay! – Do your skills in cosplay apply to anything you do outside of that, like work or any other hobbies? Funny enough, I work at JoAnn Fabrics- the store where I buy most of my cosplaying supplies. They let us dress up every so often for events! I wore parts of costumes for halloween promotions! I also see a lot of new cosplayers in my store, and I try my best to help them out!
You have a lot of variety in the different costumes you make, is there anything in particular you tend to lean towards? (genre, character type, etc)
Most of my costumes are from video games! My favorite kind of games are Fighting Games, RPGs and IIDX (saying rhythm games is silly when this is the only one I play) and it definitely reflects in the kinds of costumes I wear!
How long do you spend working on a costume?
It definitely varies on the costume, but I’m also a terrible procrastinator. a lot of times I’ll work slowly up until the con date, then at the 2 week mark I go into overdrive to finish everything!
Advice for someone first getting into cosplay?
Only cosplay things you really love! It’s no fun to work so hard on something you’re not passionate about. Also research your butt off! Think about your fabric choices, and now how to handle those kinds of fabrics! Know before you sew, save yourself the stress and headache!
