I’ve recently gotten addicted to a new anime titled “Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc”. Originally a PSP game, it has been adapted into a manga as well as an anime, and for those who enjoy mysteries and mind-boggling plot twists, it’s a must-watch!
Dangan Ronpa puts you into the shoes of main character Naegi, who has gained admission to the prestigious Hope’s Peak Academy through pure luck. However, this prestigious academy has turned into something far more sinister…
Naegi awakens in an empty classroom, and following the instructions on a paper note, he goes to the gym and meets all the other first years – an eclectic collection of different “Super-Duper High School” students with special abilities.
Suddenly, a black-and-white stuffed bear appears and introduces himself to the new students as their principal, Monobear. He then reveals that the fifteen of them must live out the rest of their lives inside the high school – unless, that is, someone can commit a murder and avoid suspicion from their fellow classmates. With these words, the students find themselves abruptly thrust into the deadly high school life of mutual killing.
After each murder, the students reconvene for a “Class Trial” overseen by Monobear. After a discussion, if the students can correctly name the killer, the killer is executed. However, if they incorrectly accuse somebody, all innocent students are executed and the murderer is allowed to leave the academy.
As the high school students continue vainly searching for an exit to the building, tension grows and despair threatens to overwhelm the students’ lives. Will Naegi and his new classmates be able to find the mastermind behind this sinister plot? Or will they all fall prey to the lifestyle of mutual killing? Watch Dangan Ronpa and find out!
There’s also a Let’s Play for Dangan Ronpa as well as its counterpart, Super Dangan Ronpa 2, for those like me who are too impatient to wait for the next anime episode to come out.
