As a new blogger to the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia’s website, I wanted to take the time to introduce what I’m going to be blogging about, as well as provide some basic info about it. The main topic of my blog will be about cosplay, cosplaying in America, making/putting together a costume and the conventions that I visit.
What is cosplay?
Cosplay is coined from the term “Costume Play”, where people dress up as their favorite anime, video game, manga or even comic book characters. The idea is to dress up as those characters or embody the characters in someway, whether it is a fantastic looking costume or portraying the character to the best of the person’s abilities. Cosplay grew popular in Japan at various anime/manga conventions, and has spread throughout the world.
Most cosplay is worn at various conventions around the world, where people can gather together and meet others who might be interested in the same topic, like anime or manga. While dressing up in costume isn’t new within the United States, cosplay didn’t pick up as much as it has now, until it became more popular in Japan. As the cosplaying subculture grew, more and more people became interested in it. Now, at most anime/manga conventions, you’ll see a grand majority of participants wearing some type of cosplay.
This blog will be exploring cosplay within America, making various cosplays as well as getting to know different members of the community. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy!
