Saturday marked the theatrical release of the highly anticipated third film in Hideki Anno’s four part remake of Gainax’sNeon Genesis Evangelion, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Evangelion fans packed theatres across Tokyo in record attendance and selling just over 10,000 tickets alone on opening day. Fans have been salivating over teaser trailers and spoiler reports all month now leading up to November 17.
In anticipation for the weekend release, the first 6 minutes and 38 seconds were broadcast on Friday in full HD on the Nippon Television Network and has since been disseminated across the internet accordingly.
We meet up with our familiar main protagonist, Shinji now fourteen years after the events of the previous movie. Tokyo-3 and the Geofront have been completely abandoned while Shinji and Rei remained frozen inside Unit 01. Shinji quickly finds out that the world as he once knew it has changed for the worse. As teased after the credits ofEvangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Shinji eventually befriends Kaworu who joins him in his search for the missing Rei Ayanami while the unforeseen consequences of Third Impact basically looms over the entire story and its characters.
The trailer for the fourth and final film in the Rebirth of Evangelion tetralogy appropriately titled Evangelion: Final, is previewed in the post-credits. Australian anime distribution company Madman Entertainment, who now sublicenses and distributes titles from the ADV Films catalogue, has also confirmed that Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo will be making its international premiere in 2013 alongside the upcoming Evangelion Exhibition Tour.
