Like manga? Like videogames? Well, you should check out .hack, the manga about a videogame! Although my gateway to .hack was the manga, there have also been anime adaptations, novelizations, and multiple videogame series from the same universe.
Different .hack series are denoted with a “//” for example, .hack//Sign and .hack//Roots. Though they may focus on different main characters and plot developments, they all take place in “The World”, a videogame that takes player interactivity to the next level with virtual reality.
As an RPG player, I loved the detail and fantasy aspects in the World. Names like Balmung of Azure Sky brought me back to the old days where I quested for days on end and battled epic monsters in parties with my friends. The stories felt new and interesting, and although the videogames aren’t fully immersive like the virtual reality headsets from “The World”, the cutscenes are great and the controls are easy to learn.
Whether you play it, read it, or watch it, .hack is awesome, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a try!
