SquareEnix went a slightly different route though, and annouced the final episode of the FF13 trilogy just the other day, “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.” Fans were excited to see that their favorite heroin will be taking the lead in the final game.
The concept for the game is quite different than the past two games in this series. Lightning Returns will take a break from the traditional turn-based action, opting for more of a third-person action game. The player controls Lightning directly, and is given a chance to explore a large, expansive world. This world however, is due to end in 13 days. It is up to Lightning to save the world, once again. The player gets to customize Lightning’s weapons and apparel, determining not only her cosmetic look, but also her skills and stats.
While being able to determine Lightning’s play-style is one way to give the game a unique feel, the game’s environment is said to also play a large part. The environment is coined as a “constantly moving, beautiful world” that will seem to almost have a life of its own, providing certain experiences and views that will be unique for each player. Additionally, following the whole time theme that has been seen throughout the series, certain areas of the world will be accessible at certain times. This means that each player will have a unique playthrough, experiencing different areas that contain different character, missions, and events.
The game is also said to have some interesting features that will connect the in-game world to the real world, but what they are exactly has not yet been stated.
These details about the game however have excited many fans. While the concept and direction of the game are a bit different, it is this new and refreshing feeling that fans have asked for. Personally, I’m very excited about what I’ve heard thus far, and really hope that even a little bit more about this game will be said at the upcoming TGS.
SquareEnix has already launched a site for this game, which can be found here. The site has a good deal of videos, artwork, and information about the game.
