Today this post will be on something other than video games. This is because, as a student currently studying Japanese, I love to share cool studying tools that I have found with others who may find them useful! That being said, I recently stumbled upon an awesome website that is perfect for anyone studying another language!
This site, called Lang-8, is a website which connects you with a native speaker of the language in which you are learning via blog posts. Essentially, you sign up, state which language you are learning and what your native language is, and then the site matches you up with native speakers of the language you are studying and those native speakers who are learning your native language.
Next, you write a blog post about anything. The catch is that you try to write the entire post in the language you are learning. Then, after you submit your blog post, native speakers will edit your post and leave comments in regards to spelling, grammar, etc. How cool, right?!
So, for example, I am studying Japanese. When I signed up, I said I am learning Japanese and my native language is English. Then I wrote a blog post in Japanese. Right after I submitted the post, not even five minutes later (no joke), I already had two native Japanese speakers who had corrected my errors and gave suggestions on how to better my Japanese! I was blown away! So, in turn, I went to those speakers’ blogs and corrected their posts that were written in English.
Not only is this a site that encourages a mutually beneficial relationship for all users who interact, but you can also make friends in other countries fairly easily! You get to see what they did with their day, what their interests are, or even read about small things like how hot it was where they live that day. You can chat with them about that post, while correcting their language mistakes, and slowly become closer to one another!
Another awesome aspect is that once people become friends, they tend to exchange Skype usernames. That way, they can text chat easier, or they can even video chat and practice verbally speaking! Nothing can beat speaking with a native speaker when it comes to studying another language.
This site also has a few great tools to help out while you use the site. They have a built in dictionary that can explain certain words when you hover over them with your mouse, or while writing a blog post, you can use the dictionary to look up words. It makes using the site and reading other people’s comments, much, much easier!
So, if you are studying another language and have been looking for a site like this, I definitely suggest checking it out! It’d be well worth your time to become acquainted with the site, and the users that utilize it.
If you check it out, leave a comment telling me your thoughts about it! I’m really curious to see everyone else’s reactions to this great website!
Oh, and did I mention it was free? Now you have no excuse to not try it out!
