Final Fantasy fans, get ready for something different…Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is coming out soon in the U.S. for the Nintendo 3DS! A surprising deviation from the typical graphics and combat style of other Final Fantasy titles, Theatrhythm is a rhythm-based game, comparable to Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero.
In this game, all of our beloved Final Fantasy characters return to save the world from evil. The world is similar to that of Dissidia Final Fantasy’s, with the return of the two gods, Chaos and Cosmos. The game consists of many levels, from the very first Final Fantasy (Oh, the nostalgia!) to Final Fantasy 13. Each level contains 3 stages – field, battle, and event. Each stage has slightly different gameplay from the others. The game will feature music from many Final Fantasy games. Square Enix appears to have high hopes for Theatrhythm, even featuring it on their 25th Final Fantasy E3 Anniversary cake!
The cutesy graphics and stylus-using, rhythm-based gameplay have brought forth a mixed reception – some gamers bemoan it as an indicator of the imminent death of the franchise, while others find it to be a wonderful and refreshing new idea. Personally, I’m very excited to see the game, as I’ve heard many a review praising it as a breath of fresh air that isn’t too hard to play, but still remains challenging. Also, I’ve always been an enormous Nobuo Uematsu fan, so I’m excited for any game that promises to be chock full of his compositions. However, I’ll reserve my final judgment until July 3, 2012, the United States release date for the game.
What’s your opinion on the newest addition to the Final Fantasy series?
