Japan has a music scene all its own, but like anywhere else it is very diverse. Cute pop idols AKB48 have been taking over one side of the music scene, while bands like Dir en Grey have been keeping visual kei fans entertained for years.
There is a group (been around since 2010, but new to me) who has been creating quite a buzz on the internet as of late.
A side project of Sakura Gakuin called Baby Metal.
The group features three preteens-
Su-Metal (age: 13)-Lead Vocal and Dance,
Yuimetal (age: 12) – Screamer and Dance
Moametal (age: 12) – Screamer and Dance
They dress in schoolgirl outfits singing out high pitched vocals backed with raging heavy metal music. Their synchronized dance moves include headbanging and putting up the “metal horns”. The official website features the slogan “Welcome to the moshpit of Chaos”, while the girl’s member profiles are cartoon images of themselves lying on the floor as if dead.
Pretty morbid if you ask me, I don’t necisarily mean that in a bad way though. Obviously death/heavy metal is nothing new or shocking, but usually adult men take the lead in the scene. I think it is pretty かっこいい. Maybe some would even argue it is less “shocking” or “innapropraite” than the bikini wearing AKB48.
