I’m not going to lie, this past spring, when I was living in Tokyo I caught onto the AKB48 craze. For those of you unfamiliar, AKB48 is a musical group consisting of 48 girls (teen-mid twenties). They hold the Guiness World record for worl’s largest pop group.
48 members in a group?! Yes, it is possible, although only about 9 or 10 of them actually get their faces on the covers of the magazines. Fans have control of the group by voting on who gets featured in the music videos more, who gets to sing solos in the songs, who gets to lead the dance routines.
Japan is crazy for AKB48, and the whole “choosing” thing has gone a little too far if you ask me. Featured on the group’s site in a new application called AKBaby. Fans can now upload photos of themselves, which will be morphed together with the face of the pop star of their choice. The result: An image of what their offspring would look like.
My thoughts: CREEPY! especially since many of AKB48’s fans are middle aged salary men.
