If you are like me and are completely enthralled my Japanese “kawaii” culture, you can see a deco-clad gyaryu or a forty-eight member pop group and not bat an eyelash
Japan’s latest “it girl” however is creating a buzz around Tokyo, and the internet, that has even me surprised!
Kyary Pomyu Pomyu, the 18 year old blogger-turned-model-turned-singer, released her first single PONPONPON under Warner Music Japan, this past July. The song quickly rose to the top of the Japanese charts as well as gaining mainstream popularity in Belgium and Finland and of course in the virtual world of the Internet. The song is one of those catchy cute Japanese songs that sticks in you head all day, whether you want it to or not.
It is the video though, that has everyone buzzing about Kyary. She stands in an ultra-colorful room filled with haphazard items including a unicorn, floating eyeballs, a dancing human brain and a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Pulling a microphone out of her ear, she begins to sing. Her unconventional style (even for Japanese youth) plays against her soft voice and innocent face.
Kyary has been crowned queen of Harajuku, recently releasing her book “Oh! My! God! Harajuku Girl!” and being featured in fashion brand 6% DokiDoki ‘s visual artwork pop up store in Shibuya.
