Oshogatsu

Oshogatsu is the Japanese New Year, celebrated on the first day of January. Celebrate an early Japanese New Year this holiday season with ikebana, flower arrangements and traditional decorations of pine, bamboo, and berries. Displays for the new year’s tea and holiday games will be on view, along with an exhibition of winter kimono. Our Jizo statue will be decorated with a traditional cap and bib, and we will share the kamishibai story “Hats For Jizo” throughout both weekends.
Wear warm socks (we have slippers, too) and warm up with a complimentary cup of green tea on the veranda to enjoy the sparse beauty of the winter Japanese garden.
Oshogatsu programming is free with regular admission to Shofuso.
