Cancelled: Nihongo Philacon 2020

In keeping with the CDC’s and the City of Philadelphia’s guidelines for public gatherings, we have decided to cancel Philacon on March 28th as a measure of caution. We are sorry to disappoint so many students, teachers, and parents, but we take our responsibility for protecting our public very seriously. We hope you will experience next year’s event with us, which we plan on making bigger and better than ever.

The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia is closely monitoring the Coronavirus situation. We take this threat seriously and are taking proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of our staff, visitors, and attendees.

Join JASGP and Villanova University for a fun, friendly, and free Japanese language quiz show open to high school students studying Japanese. The name is taken from the Japanese word for Japanese – nihongo – and a Japanese style contraction – Philacon, which is short for Philadelphia competition (the “m” becomes an “n” in Japanese pronunciation).

Hosted by Villanova University, eligible students can register online. Thanks to support from the Subaru of America Foundation, there is no fee to participate. Registration will close on Friday, March 20.

This free program has three levels of competition. Participants will be placed on teams for two rounds of questions on your nihongo knowledge. All participants will receive a boxed bento lunch and will enjoy a cultural demonstration. The day ends with prizes for the winning teams and gift bags for all participants. Registration is required.
