Children’s Day Family Weekend

Children’s Day has had several names throughout history including the Iris Festival, the Feast of Banners, and Boys’ Day. In 1948, the Japanese government designated May 5th to be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children, and it was officially renamed Children’s Day.

During the month of May, visit Shofuso to see traditional Children’s Day decorations including flying koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks), dolls of traditional folk heroes such as Momotaro, as well as traditional miniature samurai helmets, armor, and weapons. Traditional hinamatsuri dolls will also be on display.

Visit during the weekend of May 4th and 5th and enjoy traditional kamishibai storytelling and a koinobori craft activity!
